Mandarin Chinese
UC Academy is proud to offer Mandarin Chinese as a world language elective for high school students. The program is open to high school students of all grades. The course will be taught at the 9th grade level in the fall of 2011 and will be developed year by year into a full four-year curriculum. Course contents will be contiguous and will follow the guidelines by World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools. The long-term goal of the program is to help students reach the proficiency level advocated by the College Board AP Chinese Test or SAT II Subject Test.
The two major phonetic symbol systems (ZhuYin and PinYin) and the two logograph systems (Traditional and Simplified) will be taught in parallel so that students can naturally adapt to either practice in the future. We will be using Practical Audio-Visual Chinese (2nd Edition) as our primary textbook. Students may purchase books from UC Academy.
